Well, the lone pair is in an equatorial position, so it’s got 120 and 90 degree bond angles. That’s better than if it was axial, ‘cause then you’d only get 90 degrees. The T shape helps keep the remaining bond pairs at 90 degrees and the lone pair-lone pair angle at 120 - that’s as good as it gets!
