Why Is Ough Pronounced As F? [Solved]
Well, who knew? It turns out that the “gh” after vowels in Middle English is now pronounced like an “f” - think “cough,” “trough,” and “laugh.” Or, it’s not pronounced at all - like with words like “slaughter,” “daughter,” and so on. So there you have it - much of our modern spelling has its roots in Middle English!
