Why Is Clf3 Not Trigonal Planar? [Solved]
Because Cl has five pairs of electrons, it needs more space than BF3 which only has three bonding pairs and no nonbonding pairs. So, ClF3 is T-shaped to give the extra electron pair room to spread out, while BF3 is trigonal planar because it doesn’t need the extra space. Ya see?
