Andy started as a foil - he was meant to be annoying and obnoxious, and that’s exactly what he was. Not to mention, his bragging about being a Cornell alumni, his singing that drove everyone crazy, and his constant butt-kissing were all part of the package. Yup, Andy Bernard sure did suck - but that’s exactly what the writers of The Office wanted!
